While both Place IDs and CID numbers identify locations in Google Maps, they serve fundamentally different purposes across API development, browser navigation, and Local SEO schema markup.
What is a Google Place ID?
A Google Place ID is a textual identifier typically starting with the characters ChIJ... (for example: ChIJb7c_5aG3yhQR7D9UwhbvOp4).
Google introduced Place IDs specifically for software developers working with the Google Places API. When you build an address autocomplete field, fetch restaurant opening hours via code, or query photo references, the Place ID is the mandatory parameter.
What is a Google CID Number?
A Google CID (Customer ID or ludocid) is a 64-bit numerical identifier (such as 11401689387182079980) assigned to every physical location record in Google's internal Local Universal Directory Object database.
CIDs are used directly by Google Maps to render business profile panels in browsers and mobile apps without querying billing-gated developer APIs.
The Critical Risk: Place IDs Can Expire or Change
One of the most overlooked warnings in Google's Places API developer documentation is that Place IDs are not guaranteed to remain permanent:
Google's Official Stance on Place ID Stability:
"Place IDs may change over time due to large-scale database updates or if a business relocates, merges, or splits. Applications must handle NOT_FOUND or refresh Place IDs periodically using the Place Details service."
If you hardcode a Place ID into your website citations or client links, and Google later refreshes that Place ID, your links may break or fall into generic map overviews.
By contrast, a CID number is an immutable database key. It stays permanently tied to the Knowledge Graph node even across profile edits and address relocations.

When Should You Use Each Identifier?
Use Google Place ID When:
- You are developing an application that connects directly to Google Places API (e.g., Autocomplete dropdowns, Places Details).
- You are constructing the direct review link using the official
search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=... endpoint.
Use Google CID When:
- You are linking to your Google Maps profile from your website footer, contact page, or social profiles.
- You are adding the
hasMap URL property into your LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema markup.
- You are sharing deep links in WhatsApp, SMS, or email campaigns where you must prevent competitor suggestions from loading.
- You are converting between decimal and 64-bit Hex formats for Google embed widgets.
